A bouncing car tire spun off during a crash on northbound I680 in Alamo is believed to have struck a second driver traveling in the southbound direction – causing their vehicle to also crash, killing the driver.

The tragic chain of events, reported at approximately 1:38 p.m., began to unfold when a blue van lost a rear tire while traveling in the northbound direction. Investigators said the wheel continued north, jumped the concrete center divider and struck a Toyota Tundra traveling on the opposite side of I-680.

The driver of the Toyota sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene.

The driver of the Ford van remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation, according to the CHP.

Portions of both northbound and southbound lanes of I-680 were closed at separate times for on-scene investigation. The southbound slow lane was closed upon CHP arrival and was reopened at approximately 3:24 p.m. The two left northbound lanes were closed at approximately 3:30 p.m. And were re-opened at approximately 4:21 p.m.
