Alleged Robbery Suspect Arrested After Hair-Raising Freeway Chase In Walnut Creek Saturday

File

Police attempts to stop a robbery suspect went briefly awry in Walnut Creek Saturday after the female suspect abandoned her car and took off on foot across I680 as stunned motorists swerved to avoid her.

The unidentified woman was arrested by a pursuing police officer after briefly sheltering inside a business on San Luis Road. News24/680 readers at the scene said units from Orinda and Lafayette were present.

It is believed her car’s license plates were scanned by an automated reader, prompting the chase from Orinda/Lafayette into Walnut Creek. It was not immediately known which police agency initiated the pursuit.

I’d prefer not to know about the license-plate readers now, or in the future, as we don’t need to tip off future criminals on how we can spot them. If we continue to broadcast our capabilities, word will get out, and more criminals will remove or alter their license plates before committing crimes.

We take your point, Mark, and have gone to great lengths to “sit on” information we thought might be of aid and comfort to those who rip us off, only to have the PDs themselves broadcast their capabilities. It also appears that the “bad guys” are already either taking steps to slip past the readers and other gear used by police or just don’t care if they’re scanned.

I saw the wrap up. Lafayette, Orinda and CoCo in attendance. Of course Laf and Orda are deputies in disguise, working for a contract city. No WCPD units in the house, or I would have been handing out their new training manuals. 108RS

Let criminals know we have readers that way they’ll stay on the other side of the tunnel.

We think they know, Joan (word spreads quickly). They don’t seem to care much.

They’ll care if I show up before the PD does. They’ll get the Firestone treatment. 108RS

          Tire change? All around?

Well, the tires do come off the car, the seats are taken out, the dashboard, some parts of the engine, etc. that’s how a Firestone car search is done. 108RS

Sounds like a pit crew at the Indy 500!
