Friends of a Livermore man who drowned during a weekend excursion north of Sacramento are organizing on his behalf, raising more than $35,000 to help his family with funeral and memorial expenses.
Jonathan “Jonny” Nguyen, 21, was found dead in the water near Magalia Head Dam on Sunday. Friends with him at the time said the recent Chico State grad and standout wrestler at Granada High School jumped into the water during an outing with friends the day before, briefly resurfaced, and then went under again.
Nguyen graduated from Granada High School in 2019, where he was a standout on the school wrestling team.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the “Jonathan Nguyen Memorial” fundraiser had raised more than $32,000 in donations out of the $50,000 goal set by his former coach.
