Multiple crews from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded to reports of a garage fire burning at a home on Barber Lane in Martinez Tuesday.
The blaze was reported shortly after 11 a.m. with smoke and flames meeting firefighters upon their arrival.
Three residents quickly evacuated the residence but crews located about 70 cats and dogs at the scene.
Con Fire, assisted by Martinez PD, Contra Costa County animal control and helpful neighbors removed the animals and cared for them during the firefighting effort. Investigators determined the cause of the blaze was not suspicious but did not specify how it began.
