Merced County Sheriff Coroner’s officials Thursday identified a woman found dead in a car submerged in the California Aqueduct Saturday as Susan Arlynn Waskow, 77, of Walnut Creek.

California Highway Patrol officers responded to a section of the aqueduct at about 7:45 p.m. Saturday after receiving reports that a car had gone into the water near Interstate 5 about one mile north of Highway 152 near Los Banos.

Officers located a power pole that had been struck with power lines down. The Merced County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team was requested to assist in the search and dive team members located the vehicle submerged with Waskow inside.

    • Actually, I think in the last several years it was reported that something like 50 cars were found in that aqueduct! Most, apparently were stolen and or just ditched in there. But you wonder how many have people in them. Sad story in this case. Wonder if it wasn’t some kind of medical emergency IE heart attack before the accident.

  1. Good point Greg. The accident of Anne Heche I wondered the same thought. It’s sad. Waskow may u rest in God much love 😔

  2. This is sad. The first thing I think of is a medical emergency, but it could be anything. Condolences to her family and friends
