From County Health Services:

Contra Costa Health (CCH) will begin offering the new Omicron booster shots at its COVID vaccination sites starting Friday, Sept. 9.

Vaccinated people ages 12+ are eligible to receive Pfizer’s new Omicron booster and adults ages 18+ can get Moderna’s Omicron booster. These recently authorized “bivalent” booster shots are designed to protect against both the original coronavirus strain and the newer Omicron variants now dominant in the United States.

To be eligible, people must have completed their primary vaccination series or gotten their last booster shot at least two months prior to getting the Omicron booster.

Those who recently had a breakthrough COVID-19 infection may consider delaying getting an Omicron booster by three months after testing positive. Reinfection is less likely in the weeks to months after infection and some studies suggest that increased time between infection and vaccination may result in improved immune response to vaccination.

Nearly 84% of Contra Costa residents have completed their primary series of COVID vaccinations and 54.4% have gotten boosters or additional doses of the monovalent vaccines. While the original Pfizer and Moderna COVID vaccines still provide strong protection against hospitalization and death, their effectiveness wanes over time. Booster doses are common for many vaccines.

People can schedule a booster appointment at County-run vaccination sites online at covidvaccine.cchealth.org or by calling us at 833-829-2626. We also accept walk-ins without appointments as capacity allows. Community members also can get the Omicron boosters through their regular healthcare providers or local pharmacies.

      • I want to thank you again! I just got my shot at the clinic in Concord this morning. It was fast, efficient, painless. No side effects so far hours later.
I have to give Contra Costa County kudos for the great assembly line efficiency. (They’re ahead of my own medical plans response) I feel very lucky to have gotten this new vaccine the first day out, thanks to you, News24-680!
