From the City of Lafayette:

The Lafayette City Council appointed Susan Candell, Teresa Gerringer and Wei-Tai Kwok to each serve an additional term on the Lafayette City Council after no other candidates filed to run for the offices.

The City Council met on August 25 after only the three people filed to run in the upcoming election. Under State law, the City Council may adopt one of the following courses of action:

  1. Appoint to the office the person(s) who has been nominated.
  2. Appoint to the office any eligible voter if no one has been nominated.
  3. Hold the election if either no one or only one person has been nominated.

The City of Lafayette opened the filing period for candidates interested in running for the Lafayette City Council on July 18, 2022. The nomination period ended on August 12, 2022, at which time, there was only one candidate for each of the offices to be elected. Click on the names below to read each person’s candidate statement:

Susan Candell, 4-year term

Teresa Gerringer, 4-year term

Wei-Tai Kwok, 2-year term

On Thursday, August 25, 2022, the City Council chose to appoint the three qualified candidates and cancel the election, which will save to the City between $38,000 to $57,000. This decision does not impact the ability for Lafayette voters to participate in the upcoming General Election on Tuesday, November 8, 2022, which includes other important federal, state and countywide issues. Voter registration and voting for the election are coordinated with Contra Costa County, and more information is available at https://www.cocovote.us. Information about the appointed Councilmembers can be found in the candidate statements here.

It is certainly Interesting that this press release “from the City of Lafayette,” an institution that often rides the coattails of its school districts, didn’t point out that Lafayette voters can still participate in local elections since the Lafayette School District and Acalanes Union School District elections will be on the ballot.

If someone at city hall forgot about the schools, they can look to the city slogan, “Green Hills, Great Schools.”
