Supervisor Andersen Champions $25,000 Grant For MCF’s Moraga Commons Enhancement Program

MORAGA, CA – At the recommendation of Supervisor Candace Andersen, the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors has unanimously approved an allocation of $25,000 from the County’s Livable Communities Trust to the Moraga Community Foundation (MCF) for the Moraga Commons Enhancement Program.

Initiated in 2021, MCF’s Moraga Commons Enhancement capital campaign will fund accessibility improvements and amenities at the Commons and West Commons parks. The County grant funding will be applied to complete Phase II elements of the project, including:

• Replacing aging restrooms to ensure ADA accessibility
• Supporting the Town’s construction of ADA improvements to picnic areas near the All-Access Playground
• Planting trees in the Commons and West Commons parks
• Making irrigation improvements in the Commons and West Commons parks

The County determined that support for these improvements will “ensure the Moraga Commons Park continues to be a vital gathering place for the community,” and promote economic revitalization in urban infill communities.

The Livable Communities Trust Fund was created by the Board of Supervisors when they approved the Alamo Creek subdivision in unincorporated Danville in 2005. The builder was required to contribute $8000 to the Fund for every home built, and each supervisor has discretion to utilize a portion of the funds to further the County’s Smart Growth Action Plan.

“I’m delighted to partner with the Moraga Community Foundation to use some of our District’s Livable Communities funds to support their efforts to revitalize, enhance and make more accessible the Moraga Commons Park,” Supervisor Andersen said. “This is one of our treasured community gathering areas, and these renovations will benefit many for years to come.”

“MCF appreciates and wishes to thank Supervisor Andersen. She deserves all the credit for securing approval of County funding and support for this worthy community project,” said Dave Trotter, MCF’s President and former Moraga Mayor.

MCF is close – just over $80,000 away – from completing its $450,000 fundraising goal in support of the Commons Enhancement Program. Over the past 18 months, MCF has presented checks totaling $132,000 to the Town of Moraga to fund the new drinking fountain, flagpole, tree planting and irrigation improvements, all of which have already been installed or are in progress. Additionally, a large portion of these funds are a down payment towards the construction of new accessible restroom facilities, which are expected to be completed in 2023.
