Two people died when an apparent wrong-way driver traveling west in the eastbound lanes of I-80 near the Carquinez Bridge slammed head-on into another car, bringing both to a halt in the eastbound lanes – where they were struck by a third car and burst into flame.

Officers with the California Highway Patrol said the offending driver of a Honda SUV struck a Tesla Model 3 at about 3:41 a.m., killing both drivers. “Moments later,” according to the CHP, a Toyota Camry traveling east slammed into the stricken vehicles, sparking a fire that consumed both the Honda and the Tesla.

The driver of the Toyota sustained minor injuries, according to the CHP.

At this time, it is undetermined if drugs and/or alcohol were a factor in this crash. The incident is still under investigation.
