Walnut Creek Man Arrested On Suspicion Of Mother’s Murder

A 39-year-old Walnut Creek man has been charged with murder after allegedly stabbing his mother during an altercation in their Jones Road home.

Walnut Creek police said in a release that Nicholas Roth of their city is in custody, held on suspicion of murdering his mother, Darlene Roth, 74. Roth is a part-time sports writer for the Bay Area News Group, the newspaper group confirmed.

Police were called to a home in the 2600 block of Jones Road shortly after 5 a.m., according to police information released this evening, responding to a call for help from a woman who reported she had been stabbed.

Walnut Creek police arrived on scene as life-saving measures were underway from medical personnel. Darlene Roth was transported to a local hospital where she died of her wounds.

The suspect was determined to be the victim’s son. He was located at the scene and placed under arrest for murder.

The homicide is the fourth murder in the city so far this year.
