One person was killed on Interstate 680 in Dublin Friday after an early-morning chain reaction crash that ultimately closed the freeway southbound for several hours while officers investigated the cause of the collision.

Preliminary findings determined that a Honda Civic driving in the the southbound direction made contact with a semi truck traveling in the slow lane at about 5:50 a.m., causing the driver of the Honda to lose control, veer across all lanes of traffic and to impact the center divider. Officers said that initial collision left the Honda sideways in the fast lane of southbound I680 south of Alcosta – the big rig continuing on, its driver apparently unaware of the collision.

California Highway Patrol officers determined that a Ford F150 truck then impacted the Civic, critically injuring the Honda’s driver and causing the F150 to roll over on the freeway, its driver suffering moderate injuries as a result.

The CHP closed the fast lanes of southbound I-680 through the crash site to facilitate their investigation. All lanes were reopened by 9:30 a.m.

Preliminary findings indicated that driver alcohol or drug use was not a factor in the crash. The identity of the deceased driver was not released pending notification of relatives.

  1. It doesn’t take very much to get things headed off the rails in a really bad way. You have to wonder if that truck driver will every know what happened.
