Corporal Kevin Mooney

The Moraga Police Department is mourning the loss of Corporal Kevin Mooney, who passed away on August 21, 2021 following a brave battle with COVID-19 and related complications.  Kevin was 58 years old.

Kevin joined the Moraga Police Department in 2013.  At the time of his death, he was assigned as the Department’s Detective and had excelled in this position.  He had earned a reputation as an fierce advocate for victims and a relentless pursuer of criminals.  Kevin also served as a rangemaster, a field training officer and as the President of the Moraga Police Officers Association.  He began the Department’s holiday season toy drive, which collected hundreds of toys and thousands of dollars over the past few years for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program, ensuring that many children had a Merry Christmas.

Prior to joining the Moraga Police, Kevin served as a Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Deputy for 21 years, where he worked custody, county patrol and patrolled the City of Orinda for many years.  Kevin also proudly served as a member of the United States Marine Corps for 29 years, during which he served overseas and saw combat in Iraq.  Kevin retired in 2010 at the rank of Major.

Kevin was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to many.  Our hearts and prayers are with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Kevin’s death is an incredible loss and he will be missed by his family, his Moraga Police family and our entire community.  Funeral services are pending.

  1. RIP Det. Kevin Mooney, thank you for your service. I worked with Kevin for many yrs with the county he was a great guy and I’m shocked and saddened by his passing. Prayers to his family and his Moraga PD family.

  2. I’m so very sorry to hear of his passing. He visited my house once, under not the most pleasant of circumstances. I was struck by his humanness and how well he was able to calm the waters. My deepest condolences to his family. God bless you and your family, Corporal Mooney.

  3. Officer Mooney helped me in Orinda on 4 different occasions: once when house was broken into & jewelry & artifacts stolen (while I was at church!); (he helped get some back from a pawn broker!) A neighbor once asked, “Why does Mrs. Perry have police cars in her driveway so often?” I always thought he was the “Ultimate Police Officer.” He will be missed from Co. Co. County.

  4. And police unions keep fighting back against vaccine mandates.

    Literally their funeral.

    And literally defunding themselves.

    • That is definitely happening though we don’t know this particular officers vaccination status. I don’t think his department has mentioned it. Given the level of contact with the public and number of contacts they have with COVID positive people I thought the number of vaccinated first responders would be really really high in Contra Costa but research has shown me its around 44%. That startled me on a lot of levels. I hope we didn’t lose a good officer because of it.

      • If this fine officer was vaccinated I guarantee we would know because it would be a whole story itself about vaccine efficacy. When the family refuses to say, you can bet your last dollar they were unvaccinated. (Also the stats on breakthrough covid deaths in CA is less than 1%) It’s beyond sad that we lose good people to the politicization of scientific facts and the misinformation being spread by people with no medical expertise. It gets even worse when you consider the people dying from non-covid reasons because the healthcare system is flooded with anti-vaxxers that run to the hospital when their symptoms get bad.

  5. It is highly, highly unlikely that a healthy 58 year old who has been vaccinated dies from covid-19. There are immuno-compromised exceptions, but without other facts, this is presumably death from disinformation.
