A Danville man and NFL coach critically injured in a car vs. bicycle crash in San Ramon over the weekend has died, Greg Knapp’s agent announced Thursday.

“Today at 11:32 am PST, Greg Knapp (aka Knapper) was called back home to Heaven where he will be reunited with his Dad,” agent Jeff Sperbeck told reporters. “On Sat. July 17th Greg was struck by a car while riding his bicycle, and was rendered unconscious immediately.  Greg never regained consciousness.  He was surrounded by his mom, wife, 3 daughters and brother… Those of us blessed to have known him, know that he would have wanted even this moment to be a teachable one.”

He was 58.

Knapp spent 23 years in the NFL coaching for seven franchises. Jets coach Robert Saleh hired Knapp this offseason after Knapp spent the previous three seasons as the quarterbacks coach with the Falcons. Knapp also has served as an offensive coordinator for the 49ers, Falcons, Raiders, Seahawks and Texans.

It is not known how Knapp’s passing will affect an ongoing investigation into the collision which ultimately took his life.

San Ramon police have said that since their investigation is ongoing that they will not be releasing any additional information associated with the cause or circumstances surrounding the incident.

  1. Rest in peace. It is a teachable moment. Unless it’s a one lane road, I won’t drive in the lane next to the bike lane. It’s not worth it.

  2. Prayers for this family – and all the other families hurt in this way. What ever happened to the case in Lafaytte?
