Walnut Creek Assault Victim Dies – Alleged Assailant Arrested Tuesday On Suspicion Of Murder

A man suspected of severely beating another with a blunt instrument and leaving him critically injured in the Civic Park gazebo early Monday morning was arrested by Walnut Creek police Tuesday.

Investigators had been looking for Mark Banducci, 63, since the unidentified victim was discovered, cordoning off the Orinda BART station Monday afternoon after developing information Banducci was aboard a train but unable to locate him at that time.

Detectives renewed their search Tuesday after the victim died at a local hospital. With the help of a witness, investigators located Banducci on Contra Costa Boulevard near Crescent Drive in Pleasant Hill. Uniformed officers moved in to make the arrest.

Banducci was booked at the Martinez Detention Facility for Murder and is currently held on $1 million bail. If anyone has information regarding this incident please call Detective Gerstner at 925-256-3578.

The victim’s name has not been released as the Contra Costa County Coroner’s office is still trying to reach family members.
