Bicyclist Dies After Collision With Car In Martinez Thursday

Police are investigating the death of a bicyclist critically injured by a collision with a car in the 1800 block of Arnold Drive Thursday.

Officers called to the scene at approximately 8 a.m. found an adult male suffering from injuries received after contact with a car. The cyclist, later identified as Martinez resident Russell Hofeling, 65, was transported by ambulance to the John Muir Trauma Center in Walnut Creek where he was pronounced deceased.

The collision is currently being investigated by the Highway Patrol’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team in cooperation with investigators from the Martinez Police Department. The investigation is in the early phases but alcohol or drugs are not suspected to be a factor.

  1. Horrible. However…unclear if this was a hit and run. “Collision with a car” sounds as though driver stopped, or there is video.

  3. Thank you❤️. As far as I know they stopped and cooperated though it is unclear the exact cause of this tragedy. It’s one thing if it is a crime, drugs/alcohol, reckless/distracted driving, etc. But I also do feel for the driver because he’s gonna have to live for the rest of his life for taking a father, grandfather, brother, (my) uncle, friend and many others who are going to always miss his presence. He loved cycling and being outdoors and was one of the smartest people I’ve met. He worked in construction and actually saved people when the cypress structure fell in the 1989 earthquake. He will be loved and missed.
