All traffic into the Caldecott Tunnel was stopped early Tuesday morning as a car fleeing California Highway Patrol officers used the tunnel as a bizarre hiding place during a back-and-forth, wrong-way chase.

The strange game of cat and mouse is still underway (2:13 a.m.) as this is written with a white pickup truck the object of police attention. The vehicle was first acquired by police in Concord at approximately 1:30 a.m. when it began a run south on I680, CHP officers joining and then taking over the chase as the truck drove to the tunnel.

It was not immediately known why officers were pursuing the vehicle, it’s driver using extremely hazardous evasive measures in an attempt to throw officers off his tail.

At one point the truck’s driver entered the tunnel, reversed course while in the tunnel, and exited driving the wrong way while officers attempted to clear the road of traffic.
