Three Dead In Fiery Walnut Creek Freeway Crash

Investigators are attempting to determine why a car with three people aboard crashed and burned on the North Main Street offramp of I680 northbound late Tuesday evening.

Crews responding to reports of a tree on fire at that location at approximately 10:40 p.m. found the Pontiac Grand Prix fully engulfed in flames and determined that the driver had steered from the offramp to the dirt vegetation area and into a tree.

The car burst into flame with all three occupants inside, two adult females and one adult male – identified as 47-year-old Dimitri Washington of Oakland.

Early investigation indicates that the driver – an 18-year old woman from Fairfield – exited the North Main Street offramp too fast and veered off the roadway into the dirt vegetation area – colliding with the tree, according to the CHP.

Investigators said the front right passenger was an 18-year old female.

It is unknown at this time if alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in this collision as it is still under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the vehicle just prior to the collision is asked to contact Contra Costa CHP at (925) 646-4980.
