The California Highway Patrol’s Castro Valley office has determined that a Concord man killed in a head-on crash just outside the San Ramon city limits Saturday had been driving recklessly just prior to the collision.

Witnesses reported that Liupua Talivaa, 36, of Concord, was weaving his pickup truck in and out of traffic while northbound on Crow Canyon Road just before he inexplicably crossed the double-yellow lines and impacted with another vehicle driven by a 26-year-old Walnut Creek man shortly after 3 p.m.

The Walnut Creek man, whose name was not released by the CHP, was transported to a local hospital and treated for major injuries not considered life-threatening.

Talivaa, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, was declared deceased at the scene. Drugs or alcohol are believed to have been a factor in the crash, according to the CHP.

As reported via this site’s Flash Alert system at the time, Crow Canyon Road was closed for nearly three hours following the collision.
