A 37-year-old transient was arrested following a fast-moving blaze which briefly threatened the Rossmoor Shopping Center and partially damaged the Rossmoor Diner Friday.

Firefighters were busy fighting the fire as it neared structures in the area of Tice Valley Boulevard near Rolling Hills Drive at around 8:15 p.m., a witness telling crews on the scene they’d seen a man running from the area moments after the fire broke out.

Officers contacted the subject and identified him as Kyle Shields, a 37-year-old homeless person. After further investigation officers arrested Shields for Arson.

Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Arson Investigators and Walnut Creek Police Department Investigators are working in conjunction to further investigate the crime.

Anyone with pertinent information is asked to contact the Walnut Creek Police Department at 925-943-5844 or call the CFD Arson Tip Line 1-866-50-ARSON.

  1. It would be interesting to know the dollar and sense amount of fires caused or started by the homeless. I have to think it would be huge.

  2. Arson is the most expensive crime in America, and the most difficult to solve. At least they caught the guy. Mental illness?
