Sir:
Saturday’s ugly minutes in the streets of my former home town brought home the deep valley of division present — apparently — in Martinez and obviously elsewhere across the country.
Never in a hundred years would I have expected to see such a barefaced example of hate and division as I saw on Saturday. It was awful to watch people so smug in their ignorance as they literally attempted to blot out an apparent symbol of that hatred.
Obviously I hope we would be able to do better but at this point I don’t think this is likely. I would like it to be known that the actions of these two people in no way illustrate the feelings of most of the people I met and grew to love during my time in Martinez. Although they said they were from Martinez I am beginning to doubt those statements.
