Police in Dublin are attempting to sort out a lethal, armed encounter at a home in the 3400 block of Monagham Street reported at 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 1.

According to the resident of the home, he was awakened by someone pounding on his front door at that time and, when he went to investigate, was confronted by an ex-girlfriend and a man he did not recognize, the man armed and aiming a pistol at him.

The victim told officers the pair attempted to assault him, at which time he drew his own weapon and fired back in self defense, prompting possible return gunfire from the male before the resident managed to flee the home. Officers responding to the neighborhood in response to a reported home invasion call found the unidentified 28-year-old female dead of wounds received in the exchange, police said.

Her male accomplice, also 28, was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening wounds, according to police. The homeowner was not wounded during the exchange.

Police are in the area, processing the scene for evidence. They asked local residents to avoid the area.
