From the Office of the Sheriff:
Contra Costa Sheriff David Livingston announced today that he has assigned additional Sheriff’s Office patrol deputies to both the Lafayette and Orinda communities immediately.
These Deputy Sheriffs will augment the Lafayette and Orinda Police Departments’ regular patrols and will remain in those cities until further notice.
These deputies will work both daytime and nighttime hours in fully marked patrol vehicles. Additional other security measures have also been stepped up and are ongoing.
“Anytime we see a rise in criminal activity, especially violent crime, we react immediately,” said Sheriff David Livingston. “The citizens of Orinda and Lafayette should know we are out in force – some measures will be highly visible like our additional patrol deputies and other measures will be more covert. Our goal remains unchanged, to keep Contra Costa families safe.”
The Sheriff’s Office provides law enforcement and public safety services to both Orinda and Lafayette through contracts.
Anytime we see a rise in criminal activity, especially violent crime, we react immediately,” said Sheriff David Livingston.
– thats simply not true. I dont ever see a sheriff out that way I dont see them in unincoroprated areas like alhambra valley / briones. They dont even bother ramping up patrol on halloween.
Imo they Sheriff needs to beg Lafayette PD for a lesson on how to police.
You do know Lafayette PD is part of the Sheriff’s Office, Lafayette and Orinda police services are contracts staffed and run by the Sheriff’s Office.
“Anytime we see a rise in criminal activity, especially violent crime, we react immediately,” said Sheriff David Livingston. {{because we react to public outrage and negative publicity}} . We are here to “serve and protect” the interests of the sheriff’s office and a segment of the community. Let us hope you are in that segment. I am not assured by the sheriff’s words. They sound hollow.
Saw this one coming.
It’s unfortunate, but the suspects in many (if not most) of the recent headline-grabbing violent crimes in our community seem to share a common general physical description. Now if, for example, I see a car with occupants matching that general physical description, who don’t look like they are from the neighborhood, I can’t help but think twice.
I know I’m not supposed to think that way but it’s just based on the experience our community is going through lately. Laptop snatchings, robberies, burglaries, home invasions, auto breakins, even shootings. Wish it wasn’t so.
Luckily for you, sheriff Livingston can tell the bad guys just by looking at them…just like you. It’s a gift you share. “Wish it wasn’t so.”
Just wondering when they’re going to arrest that white guy up in Sanders Ranch who stole hundreds of thousands from his neighbors.
Well, at least you admit it. Biases, pre-conceived notions, stereotypes, they’re natural human occurrences. That being said, as an African American, it’s uncomfortable knowing when I (and my family) are out in the Lamorinda community, a community in which we own multiple homes, pay applicable taxes, and interact in the community accordingly, we will be met with suspicion. When I first moved here, I wanted to drive around to learn the streets, backroads, and short cuts. But the possibility of being stopped by the police because a neighbor phoned in because I looked suspicious, prevented me from doing so. For most people on here (and around here), they get to move around this community under the cloak of anonymity, even if they’re up to no good. Life must be grand!! For the rest of us, it’s not so great. So do me this favor, before you give credibility to your suspicious, evaluate all of the factors for legitimacy. Just apply that standard to everyone. All of us has a personal responsibility to make sure our communities are safe.
Increased patrolling is long overdue. Lamorinda has been hit hard, and it’s not just recently. I would say over the last several years. Social media and GPS tells criminals all they need to know about any area. Lamorinda may be a nice, low crime area – but it’s an area where people come in to steal. That alone should be reason for more police.
Very wise decision that I imagine took a lot of persuasion by Lamorinda residents.
