Supporters of an Orinda police effort to secure a drone and camera equipment they say will help them conduct searches for missing persons and other tasks have so far raised $4,100 of the $14,500 needed to secure the new equipment.

“In light of the community’s amazing response in helping us meet our original goal ($3,000 was raised in 6  days), we’d like to keep the campaign rolling! When it comes to public safety, a thermal camera is a game changer. Not only would it help us with Search & Rescue missions in Orinda’s wooded neighborhoods, it would also assist us when looking for lost hikers in the East Bay Park trails…” a statement on the GoFundMe page read.

We believe drones are not entirely new to police departments in Lamorinda as Lafayette police have used one of the devices in their crimefighting and search operations in the recent past. As this is written we are not entirely certain what sort of equipment, i.e. photographic, thermal imaging, etc. is included in its payload.

  1. Bad idea for local police departments to have drones. If it’s really for search and rescue, then the county is better for having this capability. Too much room for abuse.
