From Chief Jon King, Moraga PD:

On 12/31/2018, approximately 11:30 pm, Moraga Police received a citizen report of a possible vehicle accident on St. Mary’s Road near Bollinger Canyon Road.  Officers responded to the area and located a vehicle partially blocking St. Mary’s Road, north of Bollinger Canyon Road.

Officers contacted a subject, later identified as Richard Turner, 53 of Walnut Creek.  Turner was wandering around the vehicle and talking to himself.  As the officers began to talk with Turner, he, without warning, began resisting them and trying to get into his vehicle.  Turner continued his resistance which became a violent struggle with the officers.  Turner was eventually taken into custody.

Officers from Orinda and Lafayette Police and the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff responded to assist.  Two Moraga Police officers received minor injuries during the incident, one of whom was transported to the hospital, treated and released.  Turner also suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he was also being treated for an unrelated medical issue.

Investigators will be reviewing the case with the Contra Costa District Attorney’s office to file criminal charges later this week.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Detective Kevin Mooney at 925-888-7056.
