A circuitous pursuit which originated on Pleasant Hill Road near Rancho View in Lafayette and wended its way along downtown streets before jumping onto Highway 24 ended with the arrest of a suspect at the Wilder offramp shortly after noon Thursday.

Witnesses said police appeared to be behind a grey Volvo with no license plates which reached speeds in excess of 80 mph in the westbound direction.

There was no way to confirm an early report that the StarChase system detailed on this site yesterday was deployed during the pursuit.

Officers monitored the car’s progress as it sped westward in the fast lanes of the freeway, the driver reportedly throwing objects from the car as he passed St. Stephens. Witnesses said the Volvo made it to the Wilder offramp before the driver slowed the car and appeared to have gotten out just prior to Fish Ranch Road.

Several officers moved in to take the driver, described only as a black male, into custody.

It could not immediately be determined what drew police attention to the car and driver, though it did appear to speed away and attempt to elude police during the course of the chase.

We’ll have more on this as additional details become available.
