The Contra Costa County and the Martinez Historical Societies are co-hosting the first ever Martinez Archives Crawl this September in celebration of American Archives Month.

The Martinez Archives Crawl is a free event for all ages being held Saturday, September 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in downtown Martinez.  The Crawl is designed to provide an engaging and family-friendly event to increase community awareness of research opportunities in the Martinez area.  The public will be able to view an array of archival materials, speak with archivists and librarians, go on special behind-the-scenes tours and participate in a fun engaging scavenger hunt.

“What better way to learn about the resources of the various archives in Contra Costa County than by bringing them together for one day and providing the public with a fun interactive way to explore and “hunt” for cool stuff” stated CCCHS President John Mercurio.  “There is always something new to find in an archive and if you’re not careful, the minutes turn into hours and the next thing you know, you’re eager to write a book!  I did and had a lot of fun digging through the collections of our county’s history.”

The Crawl will offer a scavenger hunt for students grades K-6 and 7-12 as well as adults.  Scavenger hunt participants will answer archive and history related questions for their age group at each location.  Each participant with the correct answers will be entered into a drawing to win an i-Pad or i-Pad Mini.

“As the keeper of historical records for Contra Costa County, we’re excited to partner in the Martinez Archives Crawl,” County Clerk-Recorder Joe Canciamilla said. “We’re excited to share the county’s fascinating history and heritage with residents. People will leave the event with a new-found appreciation for where they live.”

All archive locations are within walking distance from one another making the Archives Crawl an easy and fun event for all ages.   Participating archive locations:

Martinez History Museum, 1005 Escobar St

Contra Costa County History Center, 724 Escobar St

Martinez Public Library, 740 Court St

County Clerk Recorder’s Office, 555 Escobar St
