Two teens were killed and three others seriously injured in an early-morning crash in Walnut Creek Sunday – an incident California Highway Patrol investigators said was caused when an intoxicated teen driver lost control of her car.

The driver, 18-year-old Ramya Ramey of Antioch, was seriously injured in the crash, according to police. She was transported to John Muir Hospital and placed under arrest for multiple counts of felony manslaughter in connection with the deaths of two of her four passengers as well as multiple counts of felony DUI for causing major injuries to her other passengers.

A CHP spokesman reported that the crash occurred at approximately 4:01 a.m. when they were advised that a car had “come off” Highway 24 and crashed onto Boulevard Circle at Boulevard Way in Walnut Creek. Two passengers of the 2000 Honda Civic were declared dead at the scene with first responders locating Ramey – alive but with major injuries, along with two other passengers who had also been severely injured.

Investigators said it appears that Ramey was at the wheel of the Honda on eastbound SR24 and was approaching the I680 interchange when, for reasons still unknown, “she allowed the Honda to veer completely off SR-24 and overturned and crashed onto Boulevard Circle, which is below SR-24, causing major damage.”

The two male passengers killed in the crash, both 18 years old and both from Antioch, were not identified pending notification of relatives. Two other female 18 year old passengers from Antioch and Oakley were also not identified.

Investigators ask anyone who witnessed this collision or the events leading up to it to please contact Contra Costa CHP in Martinez, (925) 646-4980 or 1-(800)-TELL-CHP.

  1. “she allowed the Honda to veer completely off SR-24 and overturned and crashed onto Boulevard Circle, which is below SR-24, causing major damage.” So – fell asleep at the wheel?

  2. I can’t think of a more painful lesson for someone to have to endure. I guess that Every Fifteen Minutes demonstration didn’t sink in. Maybe now it will.

  3. Prayers to the families…

““come off” Highway 24 and crashed onto Boulevard Circle at Boulevard Way in Walnut Creek” In that location… I believe its a 30 foot drop to below.

  4. We lost one of our beach kids driving drunk with no seat belt the summer before college-total heartbreak that changes lives forever. We attended the high school graduation party for him and a couple of other kids, and one of the coaches wives gave a little speech “Go out to the world, have fun, just please, please don’t do anything stupid.” Still makes me want to cry, all these years later. Darn it!!! Feel so badly for family, community, schools, friends.

  5. Unfortunate and heartbreaking. Regardless of the potential legal ramifications, this is a “life sentence.”
