Flags at local fire stations and civic building have been ordered flown at half staff Friday as wildfires burning in Northern California claimed the lives of two firefighters and are showing no sign of slowing down.

The Carr Fire in Shasta County has so far burned 44,450 acres of timber and has blown through neighborhoods and homes. Evacuation orders are in play as officials shift their priorities from structure protection to saving lives.

A city of Redding firefighter has died battling the massive blaze. A bulldozer operator was killed on the fire lines and three firefighters were burned. News that a second firefighter had died on the fire lines was announced Friday. Dozens of homes have been destroyed and thousands of terrified residents have evacuated with officials scrambling to get support to the displaced.

Three Marin County firefighters injured while battling the flames are all expected to recover, according to CalFire sources.
