Orinda Police Chief Mark Nagel said one of his officers spotted a suspicious person entering the side gate of a home on Altarinda Drive Monday – detaining that person for further investigation while waiting for backup from a fellow officer – and determined that the residence had been ransacked.

Nagel said the so-far unnamed officer was on patrol when they spotted the suspect going through a side gate to access the rear of the home at around 12:30 p.m.

The officer radioed for assistance and was watching the home when the suspect exited and was detained. Further investigation determined that a rear sliding door to the residence had been opened and that the home had been ransacked, Nagel said.

Police notified the owners and have asked them to return to help identify any missing items.

The suspect’s name and hometown has not yet been released.
