Early this morning at about 1:38 am, Contra Costa California Highway Patrol officers were advised of a wrong way driver, traveling north in the southbound lanes of I-680, in the area of Livorna Road in Alamo.
CHP units responded to intercept the wrong way driver but when units located the vehicle, it had already crashed head on into the concrete center divider, just north of Livorna Road. The driver, a 32-year-old Oakland woman, was unresponsive and pronounced dead a short while later.
In the initial investigation, it appears that the driver of the 2003 Mitsubishi Galant was traveling northbound on I-680 within the southbound lanes. While continuing wrong way on I-680, the driver then drove head on into the center concrete divider causing major damage and sustained fatal injuries due to the collision.
It is unknown if alcohol or drugs are a factor in this collision but it is still under investigation. If anyone witnessed it or the events leading up to it, please contact Contra Costa CHP in Martinez, (925) 646-4980.
It could be alcohol related, but that’s what test results are for.
