Several fires of undetermined origin raced away from responding firefighters attempting to corral them as 30mph+ winds drove several smoky blazes east of Byron Highway Wednesday – closing the highway from Camino Diablo to the county line and possibly leaving one person injured.
Dozens of firefighters, with aerial support from at least two helicopters, took up positions to protect homes, outbuildings and livestock after the blazes were reported shortly after 1 p.m.
The California Highway Patrol is in the area, closing roads to traffic due to conditions and to facilitate the passage of emergency vehicles.
Reports that one person suffered burns after fire overran a home on Clifton Court could not be immediately confirmed though Alameda County firefighters could be seen attempting to rescue livestock in the largely rural area.
Firefighters are reporting as many as 7 separate fires burning – the largest of which was estimated to be around 40-acres. One fire was reported burning on Clifton Court Road near the Byron Marina with unconfirmed reports of boats on fire at that location.
We’ll have more as details become available.
