Keith Leung, killed Sunday night when his electric car veered off the road and into a pond, leaves friends who admired his soft-spoken manner and commitment to music and theater. He was 34.
Leung was a University of California at Berkeley graduate and charter member of the Danville Community Band. He played an array of instruments including the bassoon, clarinet, flute, piccolo, oboe, English horn, all of the saxophones and some violin and cello, according to his fellow band members.
Danville Community Band Business Manager George March said Leung had a deep love and appreciation of music. The band will perform during its scheduled Memorial Day appearance at Oak Hill Park, with Leung’s empty chair present.
An engineer, Leung worked at Criterion Catalysts and Technologies in Bay Point, according to business associates, and traveled when not busy performing with one of several local bands and theater groups.
His car, a Tesla Model S, did not have its autopilot feature engaged when it left Crow Canyon Road, crashed through a fence and into a pond. Investigators said that while speed was almost certainly a factor in the crash given the distance traveled and damage incurred, they won’t be releasing the cause of Leung’s death until toxicological testing is complete.
