A San Ramon High School freshman died Tuesday after being found unconscious and unresponsive in the school swimming pool.

Staff performed emergency life-saving measures after Benjamin Curry, 15, of Danville was spotted at the bottom of the pool just before a PE class, witnesses told NEWS24/680. He was pulled out by school staff and rushed to a local hospital, where he was declared dead.

School Principal Jason Krolikowski made the announcement that the student had died in an email to staff and parents.

A support plan for students and staff is in place, Krolikowski wrote, and a team of counselors and school psychologists will be on hand to assist those coming to grips with this news when classes resume tomorrow.

Details leading up to the student’s drowning were not immediately available, though Krolikowski wrote that Danville police are investigating.
