A strong, sharp temblor wakened many in the 24/680 early Thursday, interrupting sleep for thousands at approximately 2:39 a.m. and checking in at an estimated 4.5 magnitude.
Emergency services agencies took preventative measures, moving firefighting apparatus outdoors and taking stock of capabilities.
The USGS put the origin of the quake at three kilometers east southeast of Berkeley.
Early indications are that the quake caused little or no damage. It was not immediately known if BART or local airports were taking precautions as they have after past tremors, checking rails and runways.
We’ll have more on this story as details merit.

Haven’t slept for 2 nights in a row and really really grumpy right now!
Felt it down here in the valley. Your facebook was jumping last night!
