Sheriff’s deputies investigating reports of a stolen car in the area of Livorna Road and Danville Boulevard late Tuesday night fell in behind a suspect vehicle at about 11:43 p.m., giving chase after the driver sped away as officers moved in to question him.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jimmy Lee said officers spotted the car as it travelled north on S. Broadway Avenue at Newell Avenue, giving chase when the driver abruptly sped away down Newell when officers closed in.

The pursuit wended its way along Newell at high speed until the driver of the suspect vehicle ran it up dead end Bridge Road in unincorporated Walnut Creek and crashed the car into the canal, Lee reported.

David Rodgers, 29, with no hometown given, was taken into custody without further incident after walking out of the canal, Lee said.

Rodgers was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on vehicle theft, possession of stolen property and felony evading charges. He is being held in lieu of $90,000 bail.

  1. Note to Car Owner,

Good news is that the police found your car. Bad news is that it’s in a canal.
