One person was killed and five others injured in a sprawling chain-reaction crash on Highway 4 in Pittsburg Wednesday morning.

CHP Officer Brandon Correia said the crash was reported at 8:01 a.m. on Highway 4 just west of Railroad Avenue. First responders arriving on the scene found evidence of two separate crashes with seven cars and a motorcycle involved.

The driver of a Nissan Sentra was pronounced dead at the crash scene.

Investigators determined that a motorcyclist and Dodge sedan were involved in a non-injury collision just west of the crash scene, with morning commute traffic slowing.

An initial investigation determined that the 22-year-old female driver of the Nissan Sentra slowed and stopped for traffic ahead of her when a Chevrolet Tahoe SUV collided with the rear of the Nissan, killing the driver and injuring her passenger. The name of the victim was not given though investigators said she is from Discovery Bay.

Officers said the force of the collision was such that after the initial impact the Tahoe sideswiped a Dodge truck and then collided with an Audi sedan before flipping over itself and sliding into two more vehicles, a Toyota Highlander and a Chevy Trailblazer, before ultimately coming to stop against a Honda Civic. The Tahoe also sustained major damage.

A male passenger in the Nissan was transported to a local hospital with major but non-life threatening injuries. The mother and father from the Chevrolet Tahoe were also transported to local hospital with major but non life-threatening injuries and their child was transported as a precaution. All the other parties and drivers involved remained on scene and did not sustain any injuries.

Correia said westbound Highway 4 was shut down for approximately 2hrs and 45min, though the #1 (fast) lane remained open allowing traffic to flow through. This shut down of lanes was needed due to the extensive damage and number of vehicles for this fatality collision investigation, according to Correia.

At this time it is unknown if drugs or alcohol are a factor in this collision but it is still an ongoing investigation. If anyone witnessed it or the events leading up to it, please contact Contra Costa CHP in Martinez, (925) 646-4980 and investigating Officer Gutierrez.
