Smoky Whirlpool Of Hot Air Settles Over 24/680; Some Schools Keeping Kids Inside

Persistent reports of “Smoke and Haze” in the 24/680 – the result of a contrary high-pressure ridge and drift smoke from northern fires – continued to flood our Tip Lines Thursday as temperatures mounted along with fears over the health effects of our inherited air.

Some local schools were keeping their student body indoors, with the San Ramon Valley School District electing to keep their charges inside while temporarily cancelling outdoor sports activities.

Their announcement:

“Due to the poor air quality and extreme heat predicated today through Monday, all San Ramon Valley Unified School District (SRVUSD) outdoor activities including P.E. were moved indoors today and will moved inside again tomorrow.

“In addition, all indoor and outdoor SRVUSD middle and high school athletic activities, including all home, neutral and away practices and competitions, are cancelled starting today through Monday, September 4. This includes all CIF fall sports: cross country, tennis, football, water polo, golf and volleyball.

  • This cancellation applies to extracurricular and co-curricular activities involving marching band, cheerleading, color guard, pom and dance teams starting today through Monday.
  • The only exception to this directive is that coaches or directors may meet with students in a classroom as long as the meeting does not include any physical exertion.

“This decision was made with the full support of the North Coast Section Commissioner, Gil Lemmon. We have also been in communication with San Ramon Valley Fire District Chief and are monitoring the air quality.”

We’ll keep you updated on developing conditions as we get them but for now, we can assure our HUNDREDS of callers/emailers that NOTHING is burning locally. So far.

  1. It’s ironic that as we in the Bay Area are trying our best to observe a Spare the Air day to keep our air clean, bad air then comes in from somewhere else!
