Alameda County Sheriff’s investigators said Tuesday that a man found dead atop a rental truck after an armed encounter with police in Fremont Sunday was from Orinda – and that he appears to have shot himself.

Coroner’s officials identified the dead man as Roger Perez, 24, and said that the wound that killed him was self-inflicted as no other wounds were found on the body.

It was not immediately known what Perez was doing in Fremont but police said he was in a car with several other people when they were stopped by an East Bay Regional Park police officer near a 7-Eleven store at 35015 Fremont Blvd. at 11:37 p.m.

Fremont police were also summoned to the scene, according to police, and it was at this time that a man suddenly broke from the stopped car and began running.

Police reportedly found Perez in an alley across the street from where the group was initially stopped, Perez apparently climbing atop a rental truck in an apparent effort to avoid detection.

Police said that as officer closed in Perez “popped up” and reportedly fired a weapon at officers – who returned fire.

Coroner’s officials said Perez appears to have shot himself as police closed in.
