California Highway Patrol investigators are looking into the cause of a fatal accident on northbound I-680 at the Monument Blvd. offramp early Saturday.

Officers were advised of a hit-and-run accident on the freeway at 4:40 a.m. south of Monument Boulevard. While investigating, officers found the body of a 20-year-old Antioch man in the fast lane of the freeway, apparently after he was struck by three cars – the first of which left the scene, according to the CHP.

Investigators believe the unidentified man was standing in the northbound lanes when a white sedan hit him and continued on its way. After the initial collision the man was struck by an Audi SUV driven by an Oakley man and then a Toyota Corolla driven by a 22-year-old woman from Concord.

The drivers of the Audi and the Toyota stopped at the scene and provided statements to officers. The first car to hit the pedestrian was described as possibly being a white Acura Integra.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Subsequent investigation determined that the dead man may have been left on the freeway by friends, who drove off without him.

Alcohol or drugs do not appear to have played a part in the incident. Anyone seeing the hit-and-run or events leading up to it is asked to contact Officer Mitchell at 925.646.4980.

This was the second fatality on Highway 680 this morning. Another person died in a rollover crash in Pleasanton near Stoneridge Drive earlier in the morning.

    • @Pamela – Unsure of specifics but there appeared to be contact between two cars and debris left on the feeeway. Officers were clearing the debris when they found a body in the fast lane.

  1. I’m going to see if I can get a nice photo to you this morning to possibly turn things around from the direction I’ve been noticing recently. I’m not liking it much.

  2. How sad and tragic. Prayers.

From what I’ve read on other sites (name of victim and sites withheld), he was at a party with friends, and his friends left him on the freeway.

    Very, very sad.

  3. I heard the same, Danielle.
I also heard that his friends and acquaintances are besides themselves in understanding this tragedy.
It appears that he was also recently arrested for drug possession.
I am sorry for this event; but it can also serve as a warning of the dangers of a ‘party lifestyle’ to young people.

  4. I knew this young man, he was a friend of my son and a welcome guest in my home. It seems as of late he began hanging around the wrong people. My heart goes out to his family. He was always a sweetheart and respectful in my home and my little girl loved him and called him her best friend. I mourn a long my son and his friends. Rest in peace.

It sadly does serve as a warning to young people as to the dangers of a “party lifestyle”.
