Out And About In The Numbers: Fire Marks Our Saturday

On the 24/680 beat...

Horrible news from Oakland as fire rips through an artist’s warehouse where dozens had gathered to party late Friday night.

Oakland Fire Chief Teresa Deloche-Reed reported that nine people died in the blaze and at least another 25 are unaccounted for as of Saturday morning.

Investigators are attempting to determine who was in the building when the blaze broke out around 11:30 p.m. Friday. It raced through the building, with some partiers reporting stairwells built from wooden pallets, during an dance night event featuring musician Golden Donna’s 100% Silk West Coast tour.

Deloche-Reed said she feared the death toll could rise as a search of the building continued.

San Ramon Valley firefighters were called on to battle a smoldering roof fire at 729 Garden Creek Pl. in Danville early Saturday morning, firefighters there turning out at around 6:30 a.m. to fight a blaze at a 1,350 square foot town home at that location. Luckily, no injuries were reported in that fire.

The source of the blaze appeared to be in the attic of the residence and firefighters are working to determine what started the blaze.

In happier local news for Old Cougars and New, the New Breed of football playing guys from Campolindo High School in Moraga rolled to a 40-20 win and a NCS Div II Championship victory last night at Diablo Valley College. Congrats, men, even if several happy fans reported fighting off frostbite while watching from the bleachers.

We think it safe to say the Holidays are upon us as traditionally cold weather descends and those reindeer sweaters come out. We’re starting our nightly cycle of Hot Toddies and cocoa, so we guess it’s official.

Stay in touch, everyone. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
