Police and fire officials have announced the arrest of a man they say was responsible for setting two small fires along the East Bay Municipal Utilities District trail in Pleasant Hill Tuesday night.

Mark Smith, 48, described as a transient out of Pleasant Hill, has been arrested in connection with those fires. Witnesses reported seeing a man on a bicycle in the area at the time the fires were first spotted. It was not immediately known when Smith was arrested.

Both fires were quickly extinguished by Contra Costa County Fire Protection District fire crews. The agency is looking for the person behind a series of similar fires set in the area in recent weeks.
