We’re Not Driving Very Well – Walnut Creek PD Puts Some Money Toward Seeing Us Do Better

The Walnut Creek Police Department has been awarded a $69,252 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) for a year-long program of special enforcements and public awareness efforts to prevent traffic related deaths and injuries.

After falling to a ten year low in 2010, the number of persons killed on our roadways has climbed nearly 17 percent across the state with 3,176 killed in 2015 according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Particularly alarming to police is the six year rise in pedestrian and bicycle fatalities, along with the growing dangers of distracting technologies, and the emergence of drug-impaired driving as a major problem. This grant funding will provide opportunities to combat these and other devastating problems such as drunk driving, speeding and crashes at intersections, according to a release issued Monday by the Walnut Creek police department.

“Years of research tell us that enforcement and education work best jointly to combat unsafe driving,” said OTS Director Rhonda Craft.  “This grant brings both tactics together, with the Office of Traffic Safety and the Walnut Creek Police Department working in concert to help keep the streets and highways safe across Walnut Creek and the state.”

Police plan a two-pronged approach to addressing the issue, bringing both educational and enforcement measures to bear in an effort to combat the problem.

Funding for the program came from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

  1. If we all drive just a little faster, just 5%, we will all spend less time on the road and less time in traffic. It’s simple logic. I have noticed many people are already taking that advice although I have yet to see the payoff. Maybe it should be 10% faster…Surely, we will realize results, and not just for Shirley.

  2. But seriously…I think this is money well spent! Too many people and too little road. We need to work together on this.

    • As they say in British comedy circles: “Wait for it…” The Sheriff is not to be outdone. (New post going up in minutes…)
