A hair-raising police pursuit east along Highway 24 and I680 Sunday topped speeds of 100mph and ended with one of two men detained and the other – reportedly armed – running into a Concord furniture store.

The incident took local drivers by surprise as California Highway Patrol officers fell in behind a car heading eastbound on Highway 24 in Lafayette, the car taking evasive action and accelerating away at speeds in excess of 100 mph.

Officers followed the vehicle with Pleasant Hill and Concord police taking up the chase as the suspect vehicle left the freeway and stopped near the Ashley Furniture store at Galaxy Ave. and Burnett in Concord. Officers detained a main believed to be the owner of the car and surrounded the store after another man – reportedly armed with a gun – was seen taking cover inside.

Police evacuated the store and are sweeping it for the suspect at this hour (8:31 p.m.).
