Blackhawk Man Re-Arrested; Torture, Elder Abuse Charges Added

A Blackhawk resident arrested Monday for murdering his wife and released after making bail has been re-arrested – with new charges added – and is currently in custody on $2.1 million bail.

John Tercheria, 69, was arrested the day after sheriff’s deputies found him in the Quail Run home he shared with his wife Linda Marie – Tercheria’s wife dead of wounds apparently inflicted by repeated blows from a hammer.

Tercheria, a former minor league baseball and senior league softball player, called police shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday to report that his wife had suffered an injury to her head and appeared to be dead. He was booked into jail after his arrest the following day but posted $1 million bail and was released.

Investigators said a new arrest warrant was obtained for Tercheria and served at a home in Dublin on Tuesday night. His bail amount was raised in keeping with the latest charges against him, which include murder, elder abuse and torture as well as an enhancement for pain inflicted by repeated blows from the murder weapon, according to the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office.

The new charges were filed Wednesday. An arraignment was scheduled for Aug. 23.

Associates of Tercheria said he briefly played minor league baseball for the Midwest League Wisconsin Rapids Twins in 1968 and senior softball league in the East Bay.

Neighbors and associates said the pair had been struggling through marital issues recently. Police would not confirm reports of a recent visit to the home in response to a recent disturbance there.

    • We have no concrete way of saying, Dan, as we weren’t there – but certainly people in this situation have routinely reached for whatever weapon happens to be within grasp – or is familiar to them. That includes everything from pokers to fireplace axes to, yes, baseball bats.

  1. It never ceases to amaze me why some people stay together. I don’t know these people or anything about their situation beyond what is here but couldn’t one of them moved out?
