If you’re lucky enough to have seen one in the wild you may have an appreciation for the lissome River Otters who have been returning to our creeks and waterways in increasing number of late.

NEWS24/680 Reader Amanda Ferguson writes with the sad news that one of the critters was struck and killed by a car while apparently crossing the roadway in front of the Lafayette Reservoir early Saturday morning.

A couple who came across the scene shortly after the collision moved the animal out of the roadway, Amanda says, and we thank them for that final kindness. Apparently they were a little shaken by the incident, Amanda said, and we don’t blame them.

The otters are an important part of the natural order in our creeks and waterways, appear to be making a comeback after their numbers were substantially reduced, and it’s tough to lose one.
