A decade-long sexual abuse case involving a now-17-year-old victim culminated Wednesday with the arrest of a San Bruno man investigators allege assaulted the child while her family lived in Moraga and in another state.
Police arrested Walter Melville, 62, of San Bruno on charges including aggravated sexual abuse of a child and committing a forcible lewd act upon a child. A $6.7 million arrest warrant was issued for Melville by the Contra Costa County Superior Court and he was taken into custody as he left his residence Wednesday, according to Acting Moraga Police Chief Jon King.
The San Bruno man is related to the victim and had assaulted her in at least two states, including California and Montana, according to police.
Melville was arrested without incident after a short surveillance by Moraga and San Bruno police and has been booked into San Mateo County Jail on the charges outlined in the warrant.
Moraga police said the girl and her mother reported the abuse on Jan. 28 of this year, alleging that the girl had been assaulted by Melville while the family was in Moraga. They have since left the area, according to police.
An investigation revealed that the girl had been sexually assaulted on numerous occasions over a 10-year period in at least two states.
Moraga police commended the girl “for her courage in coming forward and reporting these heinous crimes.”
Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact Moraga Police Sgt. Brian South at 925 888-7052.
10 years is a long time. He deserves the death penalty.
