A reported armed robbery at the Rheem Valley shopping center Jan. 28 was a fabrication, according to Moraga police, and the youthful “victim” who said they were robbed at gunpoint as they were getting into their car apparently made up the story.
Officers interviewing the youth shortly after their report grew suspicious of its credibility when the purported target began to change their version of events, police said.
There was no word on what, if any, repercussions the youth may face for making such a report.
Didn’t something like this happen a couple years ago? I recall someone claiming they were robbed at one of the fast food places at Rheem, and the cops debunking it a few days later.
Quite right, Paul. See the comment stream under our initial story for a reader-submitted link to that earlier case.
Good news and bad news, I suppose.
Thanks to MPD for getting this straightened out.
Police resources are valuable. There needs to be repercussions for this, the second false report in just a couple of years.
I will never understand the mindset of kids who make stories like this up, but it happens.
Called it.
