Three tanker cars containing sulphuric acid have derailed at Marina Vista under Interstate 680 in Martinez and county fire officials are on the scene to assess the situation.

The cars are not believed to be leaking, officials said, and the California Highway Patrol is on the scene to determine if a freeway closure will be needed. HAZMAT officials are being consulted to help determine how best to handle the situation.

One of the three cars is on its side.

  1. Interesting engineering problem. Hoist them back up full or drain them off first? And who’s the lucky guy who gets to hook up the hose to the acid spout?!? Glad no one hurt.

  2. Lot of activity out here. They’re keeping people out of the immediate area but you can see the cars. I guess they’re going to roll a crane car up or some other heavy lift equipment.
