Burglars Leave Blood Trail During Lafayette Jewelry Theft

Not bread crumbs but a trail of a different kind for police in Lafayette following up on a break-in at a home in the 1700 block of Toyon Road this week.

Police say the residence was breached sometime between 10 a.m. and noon on December 7, shortly after the homeowner departed. Officers called to the scene after the burglary had been discovered around 6 p.m. that evening determined that a thief or thieves had broken in by kicking out the glass in a set of French Doors to the rear of the home.

Investigators said the glass did not shatter in the conventional manner and appears to have caused injury to a housebreaker. Crime Scene technicians reported finding and collecting a blood sample on the edge of a pane of glass and have forwarded the sample to the sheriff’s crime lab for analysis.

Police said the home was ransacked and jewelry taken.

Police are seeking information from residents in the Reliez Valley Neighborhood who may have seen or heard anything that may aid them in our investigation. They are also asking residents with home surveillance systems to check their recorders for suspicious individuals or vehicles in the neighborhood.
