A 14-year-old aspiring climber found himself in trouble and in need of assistance after sliding down the face of Sentinel Rock in Mt. Diablo State Park Monday morning.
San Ramon Valley Fire crews and a CalStar helicopter responded to the area at 11:16 am. after the boy, climbing with friends, ventured outside the roped guides leading to the summit of the rock and slid down the face of the formation to an area he could not climb out of, according to rescuers.
Firefighters initiated a rope rescue, lowering a harness to the trapped climber and then lowering him the rest of the way down the 100-foot face to safety.
The would-be mountaineer suffered minor leg abrasions during the course of his adventure.
Climbing outside of established boundaries —- isn’t that what 14yo boys do?
